Gas Station Price Fixing?

Stamford Gas
I cannot help but notice that some Stamford gas stations have the highest pricing in THE NATION! Particularly the few stations who are close to the Merritt on Long Ridge and High Ridge. These stations often charge 20 cents more than stations closer to downtown. Could it be they are some how colluding to fix there prices higher than other area stations? Also, why are all these stations full service? Can’t they offer the option to fill yourself?

I just don’t buy that their fixed costs are higher and thus need to charge more. Afterall, gas stations in Manhattan, with extraordinary real estate costs, are still cheaper. A short drive to Norwalk or even some stations in Greenwich and you can find cheaper gas. I have seen gas stations in Hawaii that charge less. You can get gas for $2.50 a gallon in NJ, yet it costs $3.30 in CT??

Can someone please explain to me why gas is so expensive in this small 3 mile radius?

I live 30 seconds from those 4 gas stations on High Ridge (Shell, Mobile, Citgo, Sunoco). I’ve never bought gas on any of them. The prices are about 30 cents per gallon more than 4 miles away.

Gas in Darien (which is more expensive city to live in) and Norwalk is way cheaper than in Stamford.

2 days ago NPR radio said that CT has the second highest gas prices in US. I guess Fairfield County probably has the highest prices in the country. Including Hawaii.

But still, I see plenty of people buying gas on those 4 gas stations.

I can’t explain about Stamford vs. Norwalk, or uptown vs. downtown, but NJ has the 3rd lowest state gas tax in the nation (above WY & AK), and CT has the 4th highest (after NY, CA, HI.) That must account for some of the differences among the states.

Prices are what they are in that area because people are willing to pay them instead of shunning those stations and driving a few miles further for their gas needs.

This has been such a non-issue for a long time. Who is forcing anybody to buy gas from those stations? Springdale, Glenbrook, Summer St. – plenty of nearby places where gas is cheaper.

If people are willing to pay those prices, who are we to tell the station owners they can’t charge them? Let them charge what they want. If people don’t move on and buy somewhere else, the price isn’t too high for their customer base.

If ALL of the stations in town had the same price, then I’d believe in collusion, and we wouldn’t have the choices that we currently do.

The laughable one is the Shell at the corner of Mill River. I think those are the highest in town, and can’t help but shake my head in disbelief when I see someone foolish enough to buy there.

Even if you’re coasting in on fumes, just buy a gallon’s worth and drive to a more competitively priced station.

Duh! That’s where the rich people live – North Stamford. They’ll pay anything. And they sure as hell are not pumpin they own gas.
